What Can Essential Oils Do for You?

Essential Oils are available in many different forms and products. They come in a huge variety of scents and they can have some great benefits for both your mental and physical health. The most common form that essential oils are used is in a diffuser. This allows the oil to be vaporised where it can be inhaled. Essential oils are also used in candles for the same purpose, or they are available in several different toiletries and skin products where they can be applied directly to the skin. We look at the benefits that you can get from different essential oils.

Eucalyptus
This is an essential oil that most people will have smelled at some point in their lives. It is not for the weak as it has a strong aroma, that is made only stronger by the clearing effect that it has on the airways. It is a common component in products like Vick’s Vaporub and Tiger Balm and it has a slightly minty scent. It is popular to use when suffering from a cold due to the clearing effect it has on the airways. However, its clean and fresh scent means it is often used as an air freshener as well.

Cinnamon
The smell of cinnamon is familiar to most people thanks to its popularity as a spice used in baking, particularly around the festive period. It is a warm and exotic scent that tends to provide a cosy and relaxing feeling when inhaled. Cinnamon oil is used to help clear chest colds and works well when inhaled. It can also be used as part of a massage oil where it has a great effect as a muscle relaxant and analgesic helping to soothe aches and pains.

Frankincense
Probably most well known for the associations with Christmas and the nativity story this is a classic woody and slightly spicy scent with a fruity base. It is derived from a tree that is native to Africa and the Middle East. It has a slightly sedative function, which helps to reduce anxiety and stress in people who inhale it. It is also sometimes used in topical treatments to help reduce arthritis and relieve pain. It can also be used to help improve the function of the digestive system when applied to the skin.

Clary Sage
This is an essential oil that you will find in a lot of products. It is not normally known for being inhaled; it is more common to find it in skin preparations. This is because it has a lot of benefits when applied to the skin. It has a slightly herby scent that normally helps to mellow the stronger smelling ingredients in skin preparations. The oil has an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. This means it can be used to treat several different skin conditions. In its history, clary sage seeds were used to flavour wine where it was said to help with vision.
